Hi, I’m Joe (승현).
I’m an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto.
I’m currently researching representation learning for irregularly sampled multivariate time series in collaboration with BMO AI for my thesis.
Previously, I spent a year at Huawei Canada working on computer vision research and co-authoring a paper on real-time gaze estimation. Before that, I worked on simulation environments for reinforcement learning at UofT’s DORL Lab.
I’m interested in a lot of things, but lately I’ve been drawn to things that make people’s lives a little easier.
I’m still figuring out what that looks like, and when I feel a little lost, I think of a quote from mathematician and Fields Medalist June Huh.
Loosely translated from Korean:
Looking back, it was a bumpy road to get here, but for me, it was the most optimal road.
There is some comfort in that. Things don’t always go as planned, and it’s easy to question the choices we’ve made. But looking back, even the detours and mistakes have taught me something and helped shape who I am.
For now, I’m following what I care about right now, which is urban mobility.
I’m collecting data to understand how Toronto’s bike-share system works and once I have enough data, I want to see if there are ways to forecast bike availability and improve its service.
